U2 “Blue” It!

cupofjoeU2 fans, is your orange the new black?  Are you green with envy that most other bands have created 4 CD’s in the time it takes U2 to make one?  Do you feel this purple haze won’t lift and you cannot kiss the sky?  Social media is abuzz right now with some of the most colorful language, none of which can be printed here, describing in morbid detail what fans plan on doing to anybody or anything if a U2 release does not happen & happen quickly.  George Carlin and his 7 words you can’t say on TV are rolling in his *%#^%*# grave right now.  Well, my colorful friends, I have the answer to your blues.  U2 needs to go Back In Black.  That’s right, sink the pink, Back in Black.  Think about it, some of the most influential CD’s in music history has had an association with color.  AC/DC’s: Back in Black, Prince’s: Purple Rain, the Beatles: White Album are all examples of definitive CD’s in a group’s catalogue that either defined or redefined their presence & or dominance in the music biz.  U2 should take note.

The concept of color is nothing new to U2, they’ve been using it literally & figuratively for decades.  From singing the blues,  playing Red Rocks to starting up (Red) name the color, U2 has probably had a connection to it. The Black Eyed Peas opened up for U2 last go around, can Pink, Jack White or the Red Hot Chili Peppers be that far behind?  How many color references in U2 music can you think of?  Uno? Dos? Tres? Catorce? 40?  See how many of these you recognize.

Black & Blue & blue silken sky
Green & Blue
A Different Kind of Blue
White as Snow
White flag
Purple Irises
Velvet Dress
Red, Orange Glow
Green light
red light
Gray morning
An Cat Dubh (black cat)
Red Hill Mining Town
Silver & Gold
Crimson sky & crimson nails
Your Blue Room

I’m sure there are more and U2’s coffee is cold and it’ll get them through, but it’s green tea time for this cup of Joe blogger.   U2 should consider inserting a little color into their CD title selection. U2’s music has the power to make the colors crash & collide like an unsupervised toddler all hopped up on sugar with a box of Crayola Crayons.  Why not a CD color  title?  Which colors will U2 make us see with their new CD?  I’m not sure, but the colors better be vibrant.  If not, U2 “Blue” it.  ;)

Longtime fan. Sixth grade teacher, married and have a 7 year old boy who is also a huge fan...he didn't have a choice.

Are you crazy??? U2 should be back in Full Color !!!! Achtung Baby doesn’t ring any bell to you ??? Pluuuuuuus !!! The new album sleeve and songs MUST be a departure from “No Line” !!!

I agree Chris. Just my thoughts about a colorful title for their next CD.

Lemon…See through in the daylight…She wore Lemon…One of the best colour references there is…So I think Yellow could be one, YES U2 made it cool before coldplay stained it with their awful song (Eeeeeeew!!!!) !!!

Blue is good, sunlight…sunlight (yellow or orange again) fills my room…it’s shy and it’s clear but nothing like the mooooooooooon (blue light in my opinion!)…

Green combined with some other colours is very good : “Took a drive in the dirty rain…To a place where the wind calls your name..Under the TREES and river laughing at you and me…(what I always make out) Hey child, heavens-wide grows the donjon gate…I just got up close (or a place)…” …”Who’s gonna drown in your BLUE sea”…Eye-colour reference by comparison with the endless sea…!!!

And Violet would also do the trick in my opinion…I can’t start writing about it…I’m already crying…MAN or WOMAN for that mater…that song is Great !!!!!!

I definitely rule out black and white….U2 must use colours !!!! On the sleeve too !!!

    My thoughts…

Love it. NLOTH’S black and white cover was only part of the problem.

    Thanks !

Joe, your references to album titles that include colours are great. It´s true that colours also play an important role in some U2 lyrics. You mentioned some excellent examples! :)
Here are more colourful U2 lyrics:
Red wine that punctures the skin
    We´re mild and green
    Blue-eyed boy meets a brown-eyed girl
    Cool green valleys
    Zooropa…a bluer kind of white
    Like black coffee
    The notes were turning blue

Pam, I’m always thankful that I have a friend like you to clean up my mess. I know I’ll always miss a few, but how did I forget “blue eyed boy meets a Briwn eyed girl?” Unforgivable! I feel shame.

Brown-eyed girl across the street…On Rue Saint-Divine…I can’t cope with this song but it haunts me !!!

Thank you, Joe! There is no reason to feel shame, because your great blogs give me some inspiration to think about similar ideas myself. Your writing always shines a light on interesting aspects of U2´s music. :) It´s amazing to realise that U2 include so many colours to their lyrics. A bit more has come to mind:
    A picture in grey
And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill
Finger still red with the prick of an old rose
The song New Year´s Day contains following lines:
A world in white gets underway
A crowd has gathered in black and white
    Under a blood red sky
There are also two colourful lines in Running To Stand Still:
Under black belly of cloud in the rain
She brings me white gold and pearls

Dug from the night…Your eyes as black as coal…Even though black isn’t a colour…

This City Lights…they shine with silver and gold…and then the above lyric !!!

And the night has turned into a different kind of blue..(‘Baby’ Who’s Gonna Ride…)

The Moon is High in the Velvet Sky (‘Baby’ Even Better)

When I first met you girl…
You had fire in your soul
What happened…Your face like melting snow…
    Now it looks like this…(Acrobat)

And the moon has turned to blood
Would you help me when I’m faced down in the mud?
Will you bail me out??? (‘Baby’ Acrobat)

    Great additions Chris.

…Through silk and sky, blue and black and like a burning flag (flack?? …I’m writing from memory…)…Colours crash…collide in blood-shot eyes…If I could…

Into the half-light through the flame
    Into the night…through the rain…(???) – Bad

Her eyes are swimming pool blue…(Miami)
