Remarks:
U2, frustrated, exhausted and looking for a new musical direction, perform the final concert of the Lovetown Tour tonight. The concert takes on a party atmosphere with U2′s own crew throwing pranks and engaging in tomfoolery. The band has already become self-conscious and slightly jaded of themselves at this point over the overly serious direction they’ve taken on and are looking to revitalize themselves musically at this point.

While playing the third of four year-end shows at Dublin’s Point Depot, Bono delivers the now-famous ‘Dream it all up again’ speech during the beginning of ‘Love Rescue Me’, hinting at the band’s intent on changing its musical direction that later found its way onto Achtung Baby: ‘I was explaining to people the other night, but I might’ve got it a bit wrong – this is just the end of something for U2. And that’s why we’re playing these concerts — and we’re throwing a party for ourselves and you. It’s no big deal, it’s just — we have to go away and … and dream it all up again.’ Also, She’s A Mystery To Me is performed for the first time.

December 26, 1989 – Dublin, Ireland – Point Depot

Opening Act(s): B.B. King
Setlist:
God Part II, Desire, All Along The Watchtower, All I Want Is You, Where The Streets Have No Name, Gloria, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, MLK, One Tree Hill, Van Diemen’s Land, Bullet The Blue Sky, Running To Stand Still, New Year’s Day, Pride (In The Name Of Love). Remarks:
The verse Bono sings at the end of One Tree Hill is completely improvised; it is not a snippet. Part of a William Wordsworth poem is read at the start of Where The Streets Have No Name in tribute to the recently deceased Irish poet Samuel Beckett. This show features the first use of God Part II as an opener – the only other time it takes this role is on January 5, 1990 in Rotterdam.

December 18, 1989 – Amsterdam, Netherlands – Rai Europa Hal

Opening Act(s): B.B. King
Setlist:
Hawkmoon 269, Desire, All Along The Watchtower, All I Want Is You, Where The Streets Have No Name, I Will Follow, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, MLK, The Unforgettable Fire, God Part II, Help, Bad, Van Diemen’s Land, New Year’s Day, Pride (In The Name Of Love). Encore(s): 40.
Remarks:
Hawkmoon 269 was played for the final time, making it the only performance outside of Australia. This concert came to a premature close due to serious problems with Bono’s voice that were especially manifested in God Part II. Concerts for the next two nights were cancelled and four replacement shows were performed early in January 1990 in Rotterdam. Also, the band decided to refund every single ticket for this concert due to Bono’s mishap. Due to the premature conclusion of the show, the usual encore with B.B. King and his band was not played, and accordingly this was the only Lovetown gig at which Angel Of Harlem, When Love Comes To Town, and Love Rescue Me were not performed.
