This concert was incredible — I was somehow able to score front row seats (Edge’s side) by calling Maine in the mad rush to buy tickets in the spring of 1992.
The show was fantastic — the only show I had to compare it to was the B-52s and They Might Be Giants, which really is no comparison at all. (What can I say? I was 15 and had only been to a few concerts.) I was just at the start of my U2 fandom — only owned “Joshua Tree,” “Rattle and Hum,” and “Achtung Baby” but was familiar with their other songs.
Overall there were some real highlights that made this show stand out. I believe it was one of the first to feature both “New Year’s Day” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” (the entire spring tour I’d read that they had ignored these old classics). The crowd went CRAZY for these songs. Also Bono substituted “Mystery Girl” for “Unchained Melody” after “One,” and the band played an extended acoustic set where Bono played “So Cruel” for what (he said) was only the second time all tour, before launching into “SBS,” which got the crowd ignited. Additionally, I recall Bono phoning the White House and, when he couldn’t raise George, he asked for Barbara.
I remember being amazed at how they reinterpreted their songs live — “Running to Stand Still” so radically different, the “shine like stars” line at the end of “With or Without You,” the psychedelic solo during “Bullet.” This was the show that cemented for me — live is where U2 live.
