New plague means a new version of Band Aid’s, Do They Know it’s Christmas Time. Nothing says holiday gift like Ebola. As Ebola rips its way through Western Africa and into the psyche of the world, you knew Band Aid couldn’t be too far behind, right? Like you, I watched the original on MTV & thought, “This is such a great cause” and “WTF is Bananarama doing in the same recording studio as Bono & Adam?” and now, here we are again, 30 years later with a new epidemic, an epidemic which is a little bit bigger than the epidemic of those who want SOI erased from their iPhones, although some may disagree.
Here’s the problem, I mean other than a horrific disease ravaging through Western Africa …..GELDOF GUTTED THE SONG! Stop what you’re doing right now. Go poll 10 people right now and ask them what the most ironic, poignant line in the song is and 12 of them will say Bono’s line, “Well tonight thank God it’s them, instead of you!” Where is it? Did Apple have to delete that, too? You could find a deaf, mute, blind person who within 1 second could tell you what Bono’s infamous line was in the original song. Listen Sir Bob, with all do respect, if you were to go to Nigeria and ask an Ebola patient whether they want to die or have Band Aid 30 released without Bono’s infamous line in the song that could generate enough money to cure this horrific disease, it’s a toss up to what you’d get for an answer.
Sure the new line, “Well tonight we’re reaching out and touching you” is powerful, but I need the irony of Bono thanking God that it’s Haji in a mud hut 10,000 miles away that’s dying and not him. Not having that gem of a line is the true bitter sting of tears. Oh, I know other lines were changed in the new version as well, but come on, is anyone really that upset at whether or not Cindy Lauper’s line made the cut? Child, please.
Regardless of this glaring error, there is a much more glaring error right now and that is Ebola. The cd will be available in about three weeks to purchase. u2radio.com fully supports this cause and would like you to please purchase the song.
Think about it, it’s a win/win situation. With the purchase, you could help eradicate Ebola and maybe put an end to hearing another version of Do They know it’s Christmas Time without Bono’s line. 😉
