With the tour now less than ten weeks away, one question that’s been on my mind lately is “What song will they open with?”
Now, call me traditional, but I’m one of those U2 fans who believe that the shows on each album’s tour should start with a song from that album. Otherwise, I’d just say that they should always open with “Where the Streets Have No Name”. A show’s opener also has to be high-energy, and it has to grab the audience’s attention fully and completely. In U2’s past, it’s usually been a song that starts with a single instrument before the rest of the band joins in – for instance, the drums at the start of “Breathe” or the bass-line at the start of “Mofo”.
Based on the above criteria, my opinion is that the set-lists will start start with “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)”. It’s big, bombastic and rockin’, definitely meeting that “high-energy” requirement. It’s one of the key songs on Songs of Innocence, serving as that album’s lead single. Finally, the song starts off with vocals before the instruments start up, making it the perfect transition into the show itself. Much like the song served as the album’s introduction to the world, I think that “The Miracle” will be the main opener of U2’s shows on the Innocence + Experience tour. I’m sure that every person reading this has a different opinion, though, and that’s just fine. Be sure to leave your comments below!
