The Week in U2 – 11/21 – 11/28

The last week or so has proven that U2 isn’t planning on slowing down any time soon, even taking injuries and accidents into consideration.

Just a few days ago, U2.com announced the upcoming collection of short movies, titled Films of Innocence, which looks to give some of the world’s greatest street artists the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings on U2’s latest via their chosen medium. The project is available for pre-order now, and should release on December ninth. If you need some clarification as to what’s meant by “street artists”, I noticed that one of the names listed as having worked on the film is Oliver Jeffers, the artist responsible for last year’s “Ordinary Love” videos, so that  will at least give you a small idea of what to expect. This should be an interesting piece of work full of new ideas and stimulating visuals.

Speaking of “Ordinary Love”, is it possible that it’s already been a year since it was released to independent record stores for last year’s Black Friday sales? I’ll be giving my vinyl an anniversarial spin to celebrate the occasion. After all, “Ordinary Love” was the first new U2 song after a long silence, and from our perspective a year later, seems to have signaled the start of some good things for our favorite band.

The other big announcement on U2.com this week was of next year’s fan club subscriber gift. If you haven’t already heard, this time around we’re being offered a double vinyl set of a concert from 1980. I admit that I was a little surprised at first to see the band revisit olden days like this, but considering the time period during which Songs of Innocence is set, I suppose it makes sense. I was a little smidgen concerned that it might be a show that’s already been released in some form or another, but after giving it some thought, I think that the earliest thing that’s been officially released to date was the Boston show on Apple’s Complete U2 collection. That show was from 1981, so this should be something “new”, if that term can be used to describe a concert from thirty-five years ago.

So it seems that despite Bono’s injuries (continued wishes for a speedy recovery) U2 isn’t sitting still, and that’s great to see. I hope that the trend continues, and that sometime soon we’ll have some news about a forthcoming U2 tour.

Ever since I realized as a kid, while poring over the liner notes of the Bob Marley - Songs of Freedom boxed set, that writing about music was a viable career choice, one of my greatest desires has been to write about U2. The band has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to contribute a little something to the fantastic online community that's been built around the band.
